Burlington Stores Inc., through its partnership with AdoptAClassroom.org, is donating $10,000 to Leinkauf Elementary School in Mobile to help classroom teachers implement a new STEM program.
Officials from Burlington, which is opening a new store in Springdale Mall, surprised teachers and students with an oversized check during a pep rally on Monday.
“This is exciting. Just knowing that we have a corporation that values education and that is willing to give us this kind of community support is priceless,” said Leinkauf Principal Dr. Quentina Pruitt. “We want to thank Burlington for helping Leinkauf establish a STEM program that is going to be top-notch.”
The $10,000 will be split among Leinkauf’s 35 teachers to buy STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – equipment for their classrooms. Leinkauf is working toward becoming an AdvancED STEM-certified school.
The money will be used to enhance STEM activities across the curriculum, including coding, robotics, engineering and more.
“We are your new neighbors here, and we are excited to be able to help your school with this donation,” said Kenneth Vargas a district manager for Burlington’s Alabama and north Florida stores. “We know how hard teachers work for their students. We know they spend a lot of their own money in their classrooms. To celebrate opening our new store in Mobile, we wanted to help them out.”
Burlington makes a donation to a local school in each of its Grand Opening markets to celebrate a new store location. Burlington, the national off-price retailer, and AdoptAClassroom.org, a national non-profit organization dedicated to supporting teachers and their students, have adopted more than 70 schools across the country.
Leinkauf Elementary, located in midtown Mobile, serves 650 students in pre-k through the fifth-grade.
“I think it’s wonderful that Burlington is partnering with us and supporting the school system,” said MCPSS Superintendent Chresal Threadgill. “We need more of this – the outside business world coming into the schools and supporting our students.
“I want to thank Burlington for their willingness to come into Leinkauf and for supporting our school as we build a great STEM program.”
