Davidson, Baker and Murphy each sent swimmers to the 2018 Alabama High School Athletic Association state swim and dive meet this month in Auburn, and one relay team came home with a state championship.
Davidson’s 200 freestyle relay team of Ignacio Salas, Garrett Yarbrough, Noah Latiolais and Calvin Bylinowski posted a school record time of 1:27.95 to top all other 6A-7A teams in the event.
Yarbrough also finished third in the 50 freestyle and eight in the 100 freestyle, setting a 50 freestyle school record of 22.13 on his leg of the 200 freestyle relay. Bylinowski set a school record in the 100 freestyle (48.71) and finished fifth, while placing 16th in the 200 free. Salas set two school records, finishing eighth in the 100 butterfly (54.42) and 15th in the 200 individual medley (2:06.44). Latiolais finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle and Daniel Smithson placed 14th in the 50 free in his first state meet.
Davidson’s 400 freestyle relay team of Salas, Yarbrough, Bylinowski and Jackson Craft placed sixth with school-record of 3:20.51, and the 200 medley relay team of Latiolais, Craft, Smithson and Nicolas Nelson placed 11th. Matthew Gafford and Parker Inman swam on the 200 medley relay team during preliminaries.
Davidson’s boys team finished in 5th place overall in the 6A-7A division, and its girls finished 15th.
Davidson’s girls’ relay team of Caroline Herndon, Caitlyn Smith, Cece York and Aleah Summers set school records in the 200-yard medley (2:01.63) and 400 freestyle (4:00.65), finishing 13th and 15th, respectively, in those events. York, an eighth-grader at Denton, also finished sixth in the 100 butterfly and 12th in the 100 backstroke, setting a school record in the 100 free with a 54.89 leg in the 400 relay. Smith broke her own school record in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:12.13.
Baker’s Morgan Mangum turned in a pair of top-10 finishes, placing seventh in the 200-yard freestyle and ninth in the 100 backstroke. Baker’s 200 freestyle relay team of Reese Earheart, John Kuppersmith, Nicholas Reed and Aiden Earheart finished 12th and its 400 freestyle relay team of Kuppersmith, Reese Earheart, Anthony Thompson and Luke Webster placed 20th.
Murphy was represented by a pair of middle-school swimmers from Phillips Prep: Sallie Herndon placed 14th in the 100 breaststroke and 15th in the 200 IM, and Charleston Webb was 24th in the 500 freestyle.
In diving, Davidson senior Cameron Wilson placed third and twin sister Mallory Wilson was fifth. Inman placed eighth in the boys’ 1-meter diving competition and Davidson teammate Charlie Bracewell was 14th.
