As parents have requested, we are starting the magnet school application process earlier this year.
— Nov. 5 – Applications open and will be posted on mcpss.com.
— Dec. 1 – We will host a Magnet School Showcase at Murphy High School from 9 a.m. until noon. Representatives from all seven of our magnet schools will be there to talk to parents and potential students about their programs.
— Dec. 10 – First drawing.
— May 29 – Final deadline to apply (but we encourage interested students to apply earlier as several drawings would have already taken place).
Current students have to recommit (but not reapply) between Nov. 5 – Dec. 5.
Individual magnet schools may also host open houses over the next couple of weeks.
Information sessions on magnet schools and the application process will be held in the Board Room at Central Office as follows:
— Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m.
— Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 6 p.m.
— Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m.
— Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 6 p.m.
— Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Our magnet schools are:
— Council Traditional (elementary), which feeds into Phillips Preparatory (middle). These focus on college preparation.
— Eichold-Mertz School of Math, Science and Technology (elementary), which feeds into either of these middle schools: Clark-Shaw School of Math, Science and Technology and Denton School of Technology (our newest magnet school, which opened three years ago).
— Old Shell Road School of Performing Arts (elementary), which feeds into Dunbar School of Performing Arts (middle).
