Forty-seven student-athletes from eight high schools signed college scholarships or accepted preferred walk-on invitations and were honored last week at Mobile County Public Schools’ spring athletics signing ceremony.
Added to the 49 athletes who signed on the previous signing day in February, it brings the number of athletics signees to 96 for the year. Several others have signed at their schools without participating in the county-wide ceremony, bringing the number over 100.
Last week’s signees represented a number of sports: football, baseball, volleyball, basketball, track & field, cross country, cheerleading, swimming, softball, golf — even bowling.
“I just picked it up as a hobby to keep me busy and then fell in love with the sport,” said Theodore bowler Ballie Martinez, who signed with Spring Hill College and plans to study nursing. “Theodore really has helped me; it’s the best choice I could have made in a high school. I did their healthcare academy, got my CNA license about two months ago. It really unveiled me as a leader and as a student. I couldn’t have been more thankful.”
