Forty-nine Mobile County Public Schools student-athletes were recognized Wednesday during a Mobile County Signing Day ceremony at Central Campus.
Included were student-athletes who had signed scholarships or accepted preferred walk-on invitations in a variety of sports. One of the signees, Davidson football player Jeff Marks, was not present for the ceremony because he is already at Purdue University as an early enrollee.
“It’s so exciting,” said Victoria Ortiz, a softball player from Baker High who signed with South Alabama. “Originally I wasn’t as interested (in South Alabama) because it’s so close to home, and now that’s one of my favorite reasons for going. I found, once I went there, Mobile’s my forever home.”
Ortiz, who plans to studying biomedical science at South Alabama, was one of 12 student-athletes to sign or accept walk-on invitations at FBS programs. One of them, Williamson football player Roger McCreary, signed with an SEC program, Auburn.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to go to Auburn,” said McCreary, who will play cornerback for the Tigers and plans to major in civil engineering after spending a year in Williamson’s Signature Academy of Maritime, Engineering and Entrepreneurship. “Williamson made me who I am throughout high school. I’m glad I went to Williamson.”
Another FBS signee was Theodore football player Timaje Porter, who signed with Louisiana-Lafayette and plans to major in broadcasting.
“I want to be an ESPN anchor if football doesn’t work out,” said the defensive tackle. “Academically, my coaches pushed me to the best I could be in the classroom. Athletically, they put in extra work — countless hours after practice over the past five years — trusting me, believing in me and encouraging me to be able to keep going.”
