All students who wish to attend a Mobile County Public Schools magnet school during the 2018-19 school year need to fill out an application, and the first deadline for doing so is January 25.
This includes students who are currently attending magnet schools. If those students wish to stay at the magnet school they’re currently attending, they should indicate so on the application by the Jan. 25 deadline. If they still meet all entrance criteria, they will be automatically renewed.
Returning students will need their username and password, which they should have received from their school, to complete the application in iNOW. Other students need to fill out an Assignment of Student Number form to receive a username and password.
After returning students are renewed, other students who apply by Jan. 25 will be selected by random drawing for remaining slots.
Students who have not applied by the Jan. 25 deadline may apply anytime until June 30, but there will no longer be subsequent drawings as in the past. Students applying between Jan. 25 and June 30 will be selected randomly for any remaining openings or any spots that are vacated after Jan. 25.
Mobile County Public Schools has seven magnet schools — three elementary schools and four middle schools. The elementary schools are Council Traditional School; Eichold-Mertz School of Math, Science and Technology; and Old Shell Road School of Performing Arts. The middle schools are Clark-Shaw School of Math and Science; Phillips Preparatory School; Dunbar School of Creative and Performing Arts; and Denton Magnet School of Technology.
Students who meet the criteria may be accepted into magnet schools regardless of where they live in the county.
All required forms, along with more information about magnet schools, entrance criteria and a PowerPoint presentation on the application process, can be found under the Apply for Magnet Schools menu at mcpss.com.
