Discovery Education recognized a local teacher among 52 educators nationwide for innovation in the classroom.
Laura Dawes, the media specialist at St. Elmo Elementary School in south Mobile County, was named as a “Rising STAR.”
According to the Discovery Education nominator: “I have watched Laura blossom over the past academic year.
“She has reached out beyond her comfort zone to embrace the power of the community, building her PLN and helping others to build theirs. I know it took some convincing but even more courage for her to step outside of herself and guide others, but we are all richer for it.”
Dawes, who has a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from the University of South Alabama, as well as a master’s from the University of Mobile, has been the media specialist at St. Elmo for 12 years. Before that, she taught at E.R. Dickson and Hamilton elementary schools.
She is part of an initiative Mobile County Public Schools took with Discovery Education to give media specialists a leadership role in teaching students and their teachers to use technology to learn in the classroom.
Dawes was the only Alabama educator recognized by Discovery Education. See the full list and video announcement here.
