Forty-seven Mobile County Public Schools student-athletes signed scholarships to continue their academic and athletic endeavors on the college level, as MCPSS held its spring signing day.
After 49 MCPSS seniors signed during the February signing period, Wednesday’s signees bring the total number of student-athletes signing scholarships during the 2015-16 school year to 96. (UPDATE: Two more student-athletes who weren’t at the ceremony have now also signed, bringing the total to 98.)
The majority of Wednesday’s signees earned athletic scholarships, but a couple also signed academic scholarships and will compete in sports on the college level — Davidson soccer player Spence Chanthavane, who signed with the Air Force Academy, and Davidson golfer J. Michael Riley, who signed with Jacksonville State.
Among Wednesday’s signees were Japonica James and Jas Hill, who led LeFlore to an undefeated record and the 6A state championship in girls basketball. James and Hill signed with Tallahassee Community College.
Other top signees included Murphy track athlete Everett Coleman (Baylor), Baker track athlete Destiny Davis (St. John’s) and Mary Montgomery soccer player Madison Thompson (South Alabama), though they could not attend Wednesday’s ceremony at the Cypress Auditorium at MCPSS’ Central Campus.
“It’s very special to me, to see my family come watch me get a scholarship, sign the paper, and to see my friends,” said Murphy track and field athlete Walter Mixon, who signed with Southern University in Baton Rouge.
Kiresten Murphy of Vigor signed to play basketball as a point guard at Bishop State Community College, despite playing the position for the first time this year.
“I was kind of surprised by it,” Murphy said. “It was kind of hard because I usually run down to the go to the two (guard position) instead of handling the ball and telling people where to go. I’m glad I actually got it.”
